Liberty Park

Nieuwdorp's village council and the Liberation Museum Zeeland have put their heads together in order to realize a green buffer zone right round Nieuwdorp.

Parking facilities can be laid out on the plot next door to the present museum complex, and that is highly desirable because at the moment there is talk of a parking problem. In the meantime the municipality has put signposts that direct the visitor to a parking place in the middle of the village. This gives rise to a lot of complaints because the visitors have to walk too far to reach the museum. Buses could also make use of this new parking facility, recently extremly dangerous situations have arisen because of people having to climb in and out of the bus on a fairly narrow road.

Behind the museum a Liberty Park can be realized that would border on the present Sloebos, witch in the future could serve as a playground in the woods. As you have seen on the front of the map, there is a small lake from which a landing craft is emerging.

These so-called LVT(4) Landing Vehicle Tanks (water buffelo) were used extensively by the allied troops when they wanted to make a landing on the coast of Zeeland from the sea. This type of landing craft also played a very important róle in the surrender of General Dasser in Middelburg.

After realizing these plans, the village will have an attractive recreational area that will appeal to tourists and at the same time it will bring us a step nearer to forging another link in the green belt round the village needed to limit the affect of industrial polution from The Sloe area.
